About
Rita Valenciano ran for the 4th District At-large City Council seat in Kansas City, Missouri in 2007.
She saw the following areas as priorities, if elected:
- Development: We can breathe new life into old neighborhoods while respecting and protecting the needs of families who have lived there for generations. We can make sure business leaders understand that incentives imply a two-way street: jobs, green space, respect for existing architecture and community support are essential tradeoffs
- Education: We can use the city council members as the magnet to pull together civic leaders, parents, students and educators from all our city’s school systems. Kansas City’s youth deserve the best education available, and together – with leadership from the city council – we can accomplish that goal.
- Immigration: We can, with a well-informed city council that reflects the makeup of our city, avoid the mistakes of officials in other local governments who have drafted poorly conceived and hurtful legislation in misguided attempts to control immigration. With a city council member well-versed in immigration issues, we can address concerns in ways that avoid both divisiveness and expensive litigation. I have extensive knowledge of this issue and can draw from that experience to effect meaningful dialogue on this issue.
- Public Safety: We can build a police force made up of officers who reflect the communities they serve and who work in partnership with the people they protect. As a member of the Kansas City Together (police/community initiative) I worked on the development of a plan to jump start the minority recruitment efforts of the KCPD. We can build trust between residents and police, and we can make all our neighborhoods safe. KC Together’s Accountability Committee reinforced the premise that responsibility for public safety is shared and the community muct be included in the process of making KC a safe city. I chaired that committee.
- Transportation and infrastructure: We can make light rail work, as long as existing transportation patterns are taken into consideration and bus service to our neighborhoods remains an essential part of our public transportation system. Road surfacing problems must not be allowed to take a back seat and inspections must be conducted to make sure our bridges are safe. As a life long resident of KC, I want our city to do better in this area. As a city council person, I would ensure that residents and neighborhoods are included in developing solutions to address these concerns.
