Rita Valenciano has received several awards and certificates of appreciation for her long history of community service in Kansas City, Missouri.

- St. Teresa’s Academy, Mother Evelyn O’Neill Award for Social Justice, 2006
- Missouri Catholic Conference, Citizenship Recognition Award for Advocacy for Human and Civil Rights 2005
- McDonald’s Heartland Corporation, Heartland Regional Leadership Award, 2003-2004
- KCMO Police Department, Kansas City Together Award, 2001 - 2003, a community/ police initiative
- YWCA, Hearts of Gold, 2003 , leadership award in the area of economic development
- MANA de Kansas City, Community Service Award, 1993
Rita’s attitude and approach to community service was influenced by her activism and volunteer work for the United Farmworkers when she was in college during the period 1969 - 1973! The prevailing theme and basis for her community service, volunteerism and advocacy stance during and since that time is best summarized by her adopted campaign slogan:
